Ryan, Schermer, Coaching Staff Highlight Men's Lacrosse All-NESCAC Honors

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team dominated All-New England Small College Athletic Conference honors in selections announced by the league on Thursday.

Junior Casey Ryan (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Year, junior Nico Schermer (Bethesda, Md.) earned NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, and the coaching staff led by head coach Bill Mason has been named NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year.

In addition, boasted eight All-Conference performers as Ryan, Schermer, Chris Berry (Chevy Chase, Md.), Cam Wietfeldt (New Canaan, Conn.), and Alex Byrne (Darien, Conn.) were all recognized as First Team All-NESCAC. Sam Raye-Steiner (Chatham, Mass.), Brooks Kitchel (Baltimore, Md.), and Alec Delgado (New Vernon, N.J.) were recognized as Second Team All-NESCAC honorees.

Ryan led the league in goals (52), assists (38), and points (90) in a stellar campaign that him move up the Bowdoin record books. Through three seasons, Ryan ranks third all-time at Bowdoin in assists (127) and fifth in points (250). He is the fourth Polar Bear to win NESCAC Player of the Year and third in the last five seasons, joining Connor Fitzgerald (2006), Donal Mullane (2022), Will Byrne (2024).

Schermer earns NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year recognition, giving Bowdoin repeat winners of the award as Jed Hoggard took the honor in 2025. Schermer caused 17 turnovers in 15 games, and collected 55 ground balls for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin's defense was outstanding this spring, allowing just 8.33 goals per game, nearly two goals per game lower than any other team in the conference.

For the third time in his career Bill Mason was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year, this time recognized as the conference Coaching Staff of the Year alongside assistant coaches Donal Mullane, Zack Goorno, Tom McCabe, and Ethan Barnard. No coach in Bowdoin history has a better winning percentage as Mason has racked up a 74-18 (.804) record through five seasons, and led Bowdoin to its first-ever number one ranking in the Division III poll last week.

Attackman Berry, faceoff specialist Wietfeldt, and long stick defenseman Byrne all enjoyed stellar campaigns to collect First Team recognition. Berry is second only to Ryan in the league in scoring, totaling 47 goals, 36 assists, and 83 points. Wietfeldt was the conference's top faceoff specialist, winning 67% (140-69) and pacing the team with 62 ground balls. Byrne was another member of Bowdoin's league-best defensive unit, causing 16 turnovers and posting 59 ground balls.

Second Team honorees Raye-Steiner, Kitchel, and Delgado round out the Bowdoin All-Conference performers. Raye-Steiner was third on the team, and sixth in the league, in scoring with 56 points on 38 goals and 18 assists. Kitchel posted 14 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls defensively. Delgado enjoyed a breakout campaign in net for Bowdoin, leading the league in goals against average (8.09), and save percentage (.595).

Bowdoin will host Hamilton in the NESCAC semifinals Saturday at noon at Whittier Field.
