Polar Bear Men Place First, Women Take Second at Track & Field Home Invite

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College outdoor track & field teams opened their spring home campaign with the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday at Magee-Samuelson Track.

The Polar Bear men lapped the field with a team score of 158, easily out-distancing second-place UMF (41) in a field of seven squads. The women's team totaled 85 points to trail only Southern Maine who won the women's side with a team score of 105.

  • Men's Meet: 1. Bowdoin (158), 2. UMF (41), 3. UNE (22), 4. Colby (14), 6. UMO Club (10), 7. Thomas (9), 8. St. Joseph's (7).
  • Women's Meet: 1. USM (105), 2. Bowdoin (85), 3. Colby (36), 4. UMF (24), 5. St. Joseph's (18), 6. UMO Club (5), 7. Thomas (2).

Meet Highlights

  • John Pietro led the way for the Bowdoin men, capturing a hat trick of wins in the throwing events. He won the shot put (14.56m), the discus (42.36m) and the hammer throw (52.02m), setting new personal bests in the hammer and discus.
  • On the track for the Bowdoin men, the Polar Bears got wins from Yaw Sekyere in the 200m (23.05), Owen Tuck in the 400m (52.38), John Keneally in the 800m (1:59.92), Ben Torda in the 1500m (4:02.47), Nathaniel Kent in the 110m hurdles (15.88), Alan Banks in the 400m hurdles (58.89) and Thomas Namara in the 3000m steeplechase (10:34.0).
  • The Polar Bear men also swept the relays with wins in the 4x100 (44.62) from Tuck, Colin Tiernan, Stephan DeCarlo and Sekyere and in the 4x400 (3:39.70) from Tiernan, Huma Dadachanji, Conor Donahue and Garrett Thomas.
  • Joseph Staudt claimed the high jump (1.88m), Jack Moynihan won the pole vault (3.70m) and Brian Greenberg took the triple jump (6.61m).
  • For the Bowdoin women, the Polar Bears got first-place showings on the track from Caroline Shipley in the 400m (1:02.45), Meghan Bellerose in the 800m (2:18.28) and Sarah Kinney in the 3000m steeplechase (12:02.7).
  • Bowdoin won both relay events - the 4x100 (50.27) courtesy of Samantha Schaefer, Amani Hite, Georgia Bolduc and Morgen Gallagher as well as the 4x400 relay (4:17.35) with the team of Shipley, Leah Matari, Bellerose and Sara Ory.
  • Pamela Zabala picked up a pair of victories in throwing events for Bowdoin, claiming the shot put (10.84) and the discus (35.63m).

Up Next

  • The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday with a home meet against Middlebury beginning at 11:00 a.m.
