Fichter Nets Overtime Game-Winner for First Win Over Middlebury Since 2013

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Marissa Fichter scored with under a minute remaining in overtime to lift the Bowdoin women's hockey team to a 2-1 upset over visiting Middlebury.

The win snaps a four game losing streak for the Polar Bears (9-6-2-, 4-4-1 NESCAC), who toppled sixth-ranked Middlebury (9-3-2, 5-2-1 NESCAC) for the first time since the 2013 NESCAC Championship.

Game Highlights

  • Despite an early penalty, the Polar Bears nearly took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game with a short handed bid. Brooke Solomon stripped the puck off a Middlebury player in neutral territory and skated into a two-on-one with Julie Dachille on her right. Solomon fed Dachille who backhanded a shot wide left of the net.
  • The Panthers successfully survived nearly two minutes of a five-on-three power play. Bowdoin mustered five shots over the span, putting two on Lin Han and watching three more turned away by the Panther penalty kill.
  • With the extra skater, Jessica Young deked around a Bowdoin defender and earned a clear look at Kerri St. Denis from the right dot. The goaltender quickly adjusted to defend the shot and end the threat.
  • Young had another promising look as the puck slid into Polar Bear territory behind the defense, allowing her a one-on-goal. Young looked to go stick side on St. Denis and rang her shot off the far pipe with just over a minute remaining in the opening period.
  • Jill Rathke scored the game's first goal, on the power play, 2:48 into the middle frame. Brigit Bergin and Rathke were working space high in Middlebury territory, with Rathke finally unleashing a slapshot from the blue line.  The tally was the junior's first career goal.
  • Only 14 seconds into a six-on-four with 1:30 remaining in the one goal game, Middlebury evened the score. Carly Watson fired a shot from the right point allowing Janka Hlinka to get a touch on the puck as it flew past. Hlinka's deflected popped over St. Denis and into the net.
  • In an overtime that saw penalties on both sides, Middlebury and Bowdoin skated on a wide open sheet of ice with three skaters on both sides. After completing a long shift, Marissa Fichter skated towards the Bowdoin bench for a line change. As she made the move, Brigit Bergin slid the puck off the near side boards, and Fichter took off into Middlebury territory. The sophomore capitalized on her breakaway and buried the sudden-victory game-winner with 56 seconds remaining in overtime.

By the Numbers

  • Middlebury went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Polar Bears were 1-for-5.
