Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – Timely scoring propelled the Middlebury women's ice hockey team to a hard fought 2-1 victory over host Bowdoin in Friday night NESCAC action.
The sixth-ranked Panthers (9-2-2, 5-1-1 NESCAC) pin the fourth consecutive setback on the Polar Bears who fall to 8-6-2 (3-4-1 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- Middlebury put together a pair of promising scoring opportunities midway through the first period, in a frame where the Panthers outshot Bowdoin 9-6. Jessica Young broke out down the right boards and forced Kerri St. Denis to make a near side kick-save to deny the junior. The Panthers mounted a three-on-one a minute later, with a centering pass ending up on the stick of Amanda Navratil. Again St. Denis denied Middlebury.
- Young finally solved St. Denis 7:01 into the middle frame, putting away her own rebound. The junior took a wrap around shot at the right post, but St. Denis left the rebound sitting just outside the crease. Young quickly tracked down the puck and roofed a shot to go ahead 1-0.
- After consecutive power plays, the Polar Bears evened the game 3:14 into the third. On their second extra-skater opportunity, Maureen Greason took a hard shot on net that Julia Neuburger turned away. With Neuburger still angled off the right post, Kaite Leininger swooped in on the loose puck and put back an open look.
- The Panthers regained the lead off Lizzie Sheline's first collegiate goal midway through the final period. Janka Hinka controlled the puck on the right side and connected with Sheline as she called for the pass, skating towards Bowdoin's net. The clean feed allowed Sheline to slide a shot inside the far post for the 2-1 edge.
