BOSTON, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's ice hockey team opened the new year with a 1-0 win over Stevenson University on Monday night off a third period short handed tally. 

The Polar Bears (5-1-2) returned to the ice for their first game since December 10. The Mustangs (6-5-0) won the Codfish Bowl back in 2015 and are now 3-4 all-time in the tournament.

Game Highlights

• Bowdoin outshot Stevenson 13-4 in the first period, including a power play opportunity. Caitie Darosa stood strong in net, turning away every shot, and sent the teams into the first break tied 0-0.
• The Polar Bears and Mustangs played a more balanced middle frame. While Bowdoin still held a slight edge in shots (9-7), it was Stevenson who looked to break the stalemate with a power play opportunity midway through.
• With the Mustangs on their second power play of the afternoon early in the third period, Bowdoin notched the game's lone goal at 5:43. As the Mustang defense misplayed the puck at the point, Brooke Solomon cleared the zone and found Julie Dachille for a two-on-one.  With the defense pressuring Dachille, she slipped the puck back to Solomon who went bar down for the game-winner.

By the Numbers

• Bowdoin held a 33-18 edge in shots, with both teams going 0-for-2 on the power play. The Polar Bears tallied the game's lone goal on the penalty kill.
• Kerri St. Denis collected her third win of the season behind an 18 save shutout performance.
• Darosa allowed just the one goal while making 32 stops.
