Endicott Pulls Away Late in Tuesday Home Loss For Women's Hockey

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Endicott College women's ice hockey team scored four goals in the third period to defeat Bowdoin, 5-1, in a non-conference match at Watson Arena on Tuesday night.

The Gulls improve to 13-2-1 on the year while Bowdoin falls to 8-5-2.

Game Highlights

  • After a scoreless first period, Endicott took 15 seconds to get on the scoreboard in the second period as Courtney Walpole finished a rush down ice with a tipped shot that floated over the shoulder of Bowdoin netminder Sophia Lattanzio.
  • Endicott doubled their lead with another early goal in the third period, 48 seconds into the frame, when Maggie Layo finished off a scramble in front of the net to give the Gulls a 2-0 advantage. 
  • Bowdoin gained a powerplay just moments later and offered its best chances of the game to cut into the Endicott lead, including a hard shot from Marissa Fichter in the slot. But Vendela Jonsson swept aside all Polar Bear chances with the extra attacker to keep the game scoreless. 
  • Fichter finally solved Jonsson 4:53 into the frame when a hard shot by Brigit Bergin resulted in a rebound in front that came to the sophomore's stick for her fifth goal of the year, cutting the lead to 2-1. 
  • Lattanzio kept it a one-goal deficit with a pair of nice saves against Endicott's Jade Meier, who had two nice chances in close to pad her team's lead with 13 minutes remaining. 
  • Lexi Klein gave the Gulls a big insurance goal midway through the frame, taking a cross-ice feed from Allison Young on a 2-on-1, and ripping a shot that tucked under the crossbar at 9:55. 
  • Endicott put the game on ice with 8:55 to go, convering on a powerplay when Layo redirected a shot past Lattanzio to make it 4-1. 
  • Klein added her second goal of the game on a wrister from the right dot with 2:41 remaining to close out the scoring.

By The Numbers

  • Bowdoin held a 40-27 advantage in shots for the game, but Jonsson (9-1-1) was up to the task, stopping 39 shots in the victory.
  • Lattanzio (3-2-1) made 22 saves in the setback for Bowdoin.
  • Klein ended with two goals and an assist for Endicott while Layo had a pair of goals.
  • Endicott went 1-5 on the power play while Bowdoin went scoreless in three attempts.
