Despite Late Heroics, Men's Lacrosse Falls to Wesleyan in Overtime

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team scored three goals in the final 1:44 to force overtime, but Wesleyan University scored the game-winner in the extra session to take a 12-11 win on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.

The Polar Bears have dropped consecutive games for the first time this season and drop to 9-3 (6-2 NESCAC) while the Cardinals improve to 9-3 (5-3 NESCAC).

  • In a game of several back-and-forth runs, the Polar Bears rallied from an early deficit to take a 4-3 lead after goals 17 seconds apart to open the second quarter from Matthew Crowell and Jeffrey Odiorne
  • Wesleyan answered with a 3-0 run and, after a pair of Bowdoin goals to even the score at six apiece, carried a 7-6 lead into halftime on a score from Taylor Ghesquiere
  • Wesleyan held Bowdoin scoreless in the third quarter and opened a commanding 10-6 lead heading into the final period
  • Wesleyan still maintained a four-goal lead with five minutes to play when Crowell scored to cut the lead to 10-7
  • Bowdoin then stunned the hosts with a three-goal surge in a span of 1:23 to deadlock the score thanks to three dramatic goals from Shawn Daly, who scored at 1:44, with 28 seconds to go and - after a faceoff win by Sam Carlin - tied the game with 21 seconds remaining
  • In overtime, Bowdoin was able to win the opening faceoff but a shot by Daly was blocked and Wesleyan gained possession
  • The Cardinals were able to get off three shots in succession with the final one being a goal by Harry Stanton with 2:26 left in the OT session
