Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin women's ice hockey team opened the 2016-17 season with a 2-2 NESCAC tie against Colby on Saturday night.
The game was the first for both teams, leaving the Polar Bears and Mules at 0-0-1 (0-0-1 NESCAC). The teams split the series last year, combing for 16 goals in two games.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin opened the day's scoring and took a 1-0 lead 12:17 into the first period. Maureen Greason carried the puck around the top of the circle and fired off a shot to score the first Polar Bear goal of the season.
- Maegan Sheehan kicked the puck to the right point to set up Brigit Bergin for Bowdoin's second just 2:43 into the middle frame. Bergin capitalized on traffic in front of the net and sent a low shot to the far post.
- Colby forced overtime after scoring a pair of goals in the third period. Delaney Flynn set up Cassidy Holzer for the power play goal at 8:13. Flynn pushed the puck from the right post to Holzer in the slot for a one-timer.
- Mikayla McLaughlin knotted the game at 2-2 four minutes later. Following a faceoff, Taylor Methven swung the puck right for McLaughlin who quickly shot through the crowd.
By the Numbers
- Kerri St. Denis made her first start in net for the Polar Bears and collected 20 saves.
- Hannah Insuik turned away 44 Bowdoin shots, including four in overtime, to record the tie.
- The Polar Bears went 0-for-2 on the power play while the Mules were 1-for-5.
- Through two periods of play, Bowdoin held a 23-17 edge in shots over Colby. The Polar Bears outmatched the Mules 19-4 in the third period.
