Men's Lacrosse Uses Big Second Quarter to Cruise Over Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Junior Peter Reuter finished with four goals as the Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team scored eight times in the second quarter on its way to defeating Babson College, 16-11, on Tuesday night.

Bowdoin, which snapped its six-game losing streak, is now 2-9 overall, while Babson falls to 5-6 on the year.

Senior David Nemirov added three goals and two assists, while sophomore Brandon Lee scored once and dished out a game-high five assists to lead the Polar Bears. Sophomore Alex Osgood and first-year Matthew Crowell both contributed two goals. Senior Robert Talcott won 17-of-29 face-offs and led all players with 10 groundballs. Sophomore Matthew Logan finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Beavers.

Babson took a 2-1 lead with 10:40 to go in the opening quarter on a tally by Logan, but Nemirov tied the game 56 seconds later, and Osgood put Bowdoin back in front 3-2 with a tally at the 7:20 mark. Harrison scored off a feed from Brown to make it 3-3 with six minutes to play in the stanza, and Logan notched his second marker of the game, converting a feed from Coan with 42 seconds left in the period to give the Beavers a 4-3 edge.

The teams traded goals to open the second quarter before the Polar Bears ripped off a 7-1 run to close the half. Nemirov scored twice and Lee contributed three assists during a five-goal spurt over the span of 3:59 that put Bowdoin in front 9-5. Brown picked up a groundball and scored while going to the ground to get Babson within 9-6 at the 1:40 mark, but senior Mac Caputi scored a man-down goal with 51 seconds left in the stanza, and Osgood caught a deflected shot and found the back of the net just before the horn sounded to give the Polar Bears an 11-6 advantage at the break.

Reuter made it a six-goal game with his third tally of the night 2:23 into the third quarter. Cox notched a man-up goal off a feed from Logan to get the Beavers back within 12-7, but Bowdoin scored the final three goals of the period to build an eight-goal edge. Reuter and junior Brandon Rothman scored back-to-back markers just 1:27 apart, and Lee followed with his first of the night with 33 seconds left in the frame to make it 15-7. 

Peter Mumford posted 10 saves for Bowdoin. John Young played the final 2:31 for the Polar Bears, stopping one shot. The Polar Bears finished with a 46-30 advantage in shots and 45-29 edge in groundballs.

Bowdoin will return to action on Saturday as they take on Connecticut College at 1:00 p.m. at Ryan Field.
