Wild Third Period Leads Women's Hockey To Season-Opening Win

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team never trailed and erupted for three late goals in a 6-3 season-opening win over Colby on Friday evening at Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears (1-0-0) and Mules (0-1-0) will play again on Saturday afternoon in Waterville.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin controlled the early play in the opening period, recording their first goal of the season from first-year Brooke Solomon, who skated unmarked through neutral zone and ripped a high shot for first collegiate score at 8:09
  • After Colby killed off 5x3 power play for Bowdoin, the Mules upped the offensive pressure. Bowdoin was able to hold off a late Colby flurry to hold a 1-0 lead after one period
  • Colby replied early in the second period to tie the game. Megan Fortier collected a bad Bowdoin pass in neutral zone and skated in alone, beating Bowdoin netminder Lan Crofton with a backhander
  • After withstanding more pressure from the Mules, Bowdoin was able to score twice late in the period to create some breathing room
  • A pretty 2-on-1 breakaway for the Polar Bears saw Jessica Bowen feed Ariana Bourque with a perfect cross-ice pass for a back-post one-timer at 11:37
  • Late in the frame, following a Colby penalty for too many players, Julie Dachille slipped a pass in front to Maureen Greason, who roofed her first goal of the season with 51 seconds left in the period, giving the hosts a 3-1 lead
  • On two occasions in the third period Colby was able to trim the lead to a single goal, only to have Bowdoin answer each time in a wild final frame
  • A Mule goal by Katie McLaughlin with 9:17 cut the lead to 3-2, but Bowdoin was able to answer with 4:20 to go when Bourque netted her second of the contest
  • Delaney Flynn scored 30 seconds later to make it 4-3, but Julie Dachille replied 50 seconds later for Bowdoin.
  • Maegan Sheehan scored her first career goal with 2:36 to play, sealing the win for the Polar Bears

By The Numbers

  • Bowdoin held a slim 25-24 advantage in shots as Crofton finished with 21 saves and Angelica Crites ended with 19

  • Bourque finished with two goals for the Polar Bears
  • McLaughlin and Flynn had a goal and an assist apiece for the Mules
