AMHERST, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team opened its season with a road victory at Amherst on Saturday.
The Polar Bears opened a 45-0 lead en route to a 92-0 victory. Bowdoin (1-0) will return to action next weekend as they hosts Tufts University at 11:00 a.m.
Bowdoin got a pair of tries from Charlotte Kleiman in the opening stanza, as Randi London, Samantha Hoegle, Anna Piotti, Pamela Zabala and Emily Athanas-Linden scored one apiece. London converted on five kicks to give the Polar Bears a large halftime lead.
Addison Carvajal scored three times and converted on six second-half kicks to round out the scoring. Emily King, new to the scrumhalf position, and Paige Pfannenstiel, playing flanker for the first time made impressive contributions to a solid team effort. Making her debut at prop, Cristina Lima helped Bowdoin in the scrums and was strong with the ball in the open.
Bowdoin's B-team defeated Connecticut College in the second match of the day, 10 - 0. Georgia Bolduc attacked from the base of the scrum and outpaced the defense 35 meters for the try just before halftime, 5-0. Late in the second half Cammie Odgen-Fung broke away during phase play, side-stepped defenders and sprinted to the end zone.
