Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine- The Amherst women's ice hockey team used a pair of third period goals to secure a 3-1 win over Bowdoin on Friday evening.
The Polar Bears drop their second straight and fall to 10-10-3 (5-7-3 NESCAC). Tenth ranked Amherst improves to 13-5-5 with a 9-2-4 mark in conference action.
Bowdoin and Amherst ended the first period tied 0-0, with no major scoring opportunities for either side. Coming out in the second frame, Amherst's Erin Martin had a few promising looks which included a shorthanded breakaway resulting a one-on-one with Beth Findley. The Lord Jeffs finally put themselves on the board, capitalizing on a power play opportunity, with just 2:36 remaining in the period. Findley made a play on Hayley Opperman's shot from the right side, but the resulting rebound was put away by a diving Courtney Baranek on the opposite post. Bowdoin came right back with a goal in the final 30 seconds, with Chelsea MacNeil flipping the puck over Kerri Stuart in net.
Amherst came out scoring under two minutes into the final period with Emily Flom lofting a shot from close range, followed by an insurance goal at 16:30. Melissa Martin fired off a shot from the right circle, with Findley making the stop, but Eileen Harris collected the puck and slipped it through the five-hole for a 3-1 lead late in the third.
Findley stopped 22 shots in net for Bowdoin, while Stuart made 26 saves on the opposite side of the ice.
Bowdoin and Amherst faceoff again tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Polar Bears will recognize its five graduating seniors during a pregame ceremony.
