Bates Wins Maine State Indoor Track and Field Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bates College claimed the 2014 Maine State Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday evening at William Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin College.

It is the second consecutive state crown for the Bobcats, who totaled 174 points to defeat closest rival Bowdoin, with 147. Southern Maine recorded 122 team points, followed by Colby (107) and St. Joseph's (7).

Coby Horowitz led the way for Bowdoin, claiming a pair of wins for the host Polar Bears in his final Maine State Meet. The senior won the 1000 meter run (2:29.57) and claimed the mile (4:15.97). As a result, he was named as the Most Valuable Performer of the championship for running events. Jamie Ruginski of Southern Maine was named Most Valuable Performer in the field events.

Sam Seekins won the 5000 meters (15:06.12) for Bowdoin as well. It marks the fourth consecutive year that Seekins won the 5000 meters at the championship, marking the first time that has occurred in the 45-year history of the meet.

In the field events for Bowdoin, Christopher Genco won the high jump with a winning leap of 1.88 meters.

The Polar Bears will return to competition at the Dave Hemery Invitational hosted next Saturday by Boston University.
