Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's soccer team saw its second come to an end in a 3-0 defeat to Roger Williams in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championship Saturday at MIT.
The Polar Bears conclude a fantastic season with a 12-5-0 record and their third consecutive NCAA Division III Championship appearance. The Hawks advance to the Second Round of the tournament and improve to 18-2-4 on the season.
Roger Williams controlled the early play, but the Bowdoin defense was able to sweep aside several early chances by the Hawks. The Polar Bears continued to stymie Roger Williams until the 30th minute when Jessica Valenti put home her eighth goal of the season with a shot inside the far post at 29:17. Mariah Kaiser gave the Hawks a little breathing room before intermission with her 17th goal of the campaign at 38:19. She added another goal at 54:50 in the second period to put the contest out of reach.
In her first start of the season, Bowdoin goaltender Rachel Stout stood tall, making nine saves. Roger Williams held a 23-19 advantage in shots, but Bowdoin led 4-3 in corner kicks.
The loss ends the fantastic career of six Bowdoin seniors - Abby Einwag, Kaley Nelson, Jenna DiCicco, Alexa Yurick, Kathleen Smith and Amanda Kinneston - who helped lead a resurgence in the women's soccer program at Bowdoin, collecting 41 wins over the last four seasons and making three-straight NCAA appearances for the first time since the late-90's.
