Sustainability - Green Athletics

Green Athletics Initiatives

  1. Implement Bowdoin's commitment to sustainability through everyday practices in our athletics programs
  2. Communicate the work Bowdoin has done to make our facilities more sustainable
  3. Make sporting events (games, meets, etc.) places where it is easy to recycle/compost and follow other sustainable practices
  4. Collaborate with other student groups across campus
  5. Create events that raise awareness about sustainability in athletics

I believe that sustainability should be implemented in all aspects of our lives, including when we are attending a sporting event or playing in a game. There are endless possibilities when it comes to making our athletic programs more sustainable and I believe that we can successfully engage both athletes and sports fans to participate in sustainable practices and spread awareness about how sustainability and athletics intersect.

I think that everyone, no matter what interest they have. Everyone should incorporate sustainability into their daily lives. I think the green athletics team is a great example of how sustainability can be worked into our everyday lives. I also think that there are so many different parts we can "make green", from snacks to equipment, there are definition improvements that can be made. Considering how big athletics are at Bowdoin, as we implement strategies it will have a huge impact on our carbon footprints.

I am interested in Green Athletics because I believe that many people forget to act sustainably when they are in certain settings. At Bowdoin, and many other places, while playing sports or in some other athletic context, people might forget that their actions can still impact the environment. That is why I hope Green Athletics can work to spread awareness and ensure people act sustainably all the time, even when they are on the court, or the field, or the track, or wherever they play their sport.

I am interested in Green Athletics because I am an athlete myself and want to help educate more Bowdoin students on the importance of sustainability.

I want to mix my interest for environmental studies and my love for softball as an athlete on campus.
