WATERVILLE, Maine - The Bowdoin women's rugby team remained perfect on the season and picked up its fifth consecutive win to open the season on Saturday at Colby.
The Polar Bears earned a 76-5 victory and will return to action next Saturday vs. Williams on Homecoming Weekend. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
Senior co-captain Emily Athanas-Linden opened the scoring, taking advantage of a Colby penalty with a quick tap and powering into the in-goal area. Senior #8 Randi London followed with a strong run and score of her own when she attacked upfield off the base of the scrum.
Using a tactical combination of passing, running and well-placed kicks, the ball moved upfield again and into a series of rucks, which Colby successfully defended until Sarah Wilson drove upfield five meters for the score. Randi London made the conversion giving Bowdoin the 17 - 0 lead. Mounting an offensive attack of their own, Colby looked to move the ball out wide to their All-American center, but flanker Paige Pfannenstiel intercepted the pass and dotted it down under the uprights, converted by London. Good ball handling and decisive running increased the first half scoring with tries from Addison Carvajal, Le'Shauna Phinazee, Samantha Hoegle, and a pair from winger Katie Craighill.
Bowdoin regrouped with line up changes in the second half and continued their dominance. Balanced scoring in the second half yielded two tries from first-year prop Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik and two from co-captain Hayleigh Kein. Maddie Lemal-Brown finished the scoring, running a support line and taking a great pass from Alice Kim, while London added another conversion. Colby mounted an offensive series, moving the ball upfield where they earned a penalty inside Bowdoin's 22-meter line. Winning their own ruck and catching Bowdoin short on defense on one side, they spun the ball to the left to notch the first score against the Polar Bears this fall.
