MEDFORD, Mass. - Behind first-place performances by Coby Horowitz, Michele Kaufman, and the Distance Medley Relay team, the Bowdoin College men's and women's track and field teams both took fifth at the NESCAC Championships Saturday at Tufts University.
Coby Horowitz, who won the NESCAC Cross Country title last fall, claimed the men's 1500 meter run (3:53.46) and anchored Bowdoin's Men's Distance Medley Relay squad that defended its conference title, placing first in 10:10.31 to edge Middlebury at the wire. James Boeding ran leadoff, followed by Isaac May, Jacob Ellis and closed out by Horowitz.
Michele Kaufman captured the title in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a winning time of 14.81 seconds. In addition, Kaufman established a new school record by taking second in the long jump with a distance of 5.57 meters, breaking the record held by Laura Peterson.
The Bowdoin women scored 82 points to take fifth of the 11 programs. The Polar Bear men scored 57 team points to finish fifth of 11 schools.
The Bowdoin women also had excellent performances on the track from Emily Clark, who was the runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.40) and Camille Wasinger, who took fifth in the 1500 meters (4:44.74). In the field events, Erin Silva was second in the pole vault (3.50 meters), Katharine Krupp was third in the triple jump (11.16 meters) and Hayleigh Kein was fourth in the high jump (1.60 meters). Katherine Harmon had a stellar day with a pair of third-place showings in the discus (36.73 meters) and hammer throw (50.88 meters). Bowdoin's best relay performance came from the 4x800 meter relay squad of Carolyn Veilleux, Alana Menendez, Maggie Bryan and Wasinger, who placed fourth in 9:37.16.
Other top finishes for the Bowdoin men included Samuel Chick's fourth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (55.50), Ellis' fifth-place showing in 800 meter (1:53.67) and Eddy Page's fifth-place finish in the pole vault (4.00 meters). Bowdoin performed well in the 4x100 relay as the team of Rickey Larke, Matthew Gamache, David Bean and Jarred Kennedy-Loving placed third (42.51).
