WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin women's ice hockey team fell 4-3 at Colby despite producing three power play goals on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (0-2-0, 0-2-0 NESCAC) came up one goal short in their second straight game against Mules (2-0-0, 2-0-0 NESCAC).
Bowdoin scored less than ten minutes into the opening period off their first power play opportunity of the game. Jessica Bowen converted on a shot from the top of the circles, to put the Polar Bears up 1-0. The lead lasted barely six minutes as Lauren Guarente answered back with Colby's first of the game. The two teams ended the period knotted up 1-1.
Megan Fortier scored her first goal of the season 8:38 in the second frame, to break the tie. Colby's Jess Barkley scored her team's third of the game less than two minutes later, sparking a Polar Bear timeout. Capitalizing on another Colby penalty, Ariana Bourque took advantage of a goalie screen to tuck the puck up inside Brianne Wheeler's glove side, cutting the Mule's lead to one.
Trailing 3-2, Bowdoin earned another power play just 30 seconds into the third period. Unable to even the score, the two teams returned to even strength, allowing Samantha Slotnick to notch the eventual game-winner in the sixth minute. The Polar Bears' offense was not finished, as Chelsea MacNeil netter another man up goal for Bowdoin. MacNeil skated in uncontested and sniped a low angle shot over the goalie's shoulder, to close the gap at 4-3. Despite another power play opportunity in the final five minutes, Bowdoin was unable to re-tie the game.
Beth Findley made 36 stops in net for the Polar Bears, while Wheeler made 28 saves for Colby.
Bowdoin travels to UMass-Boston on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 PM game against the Beacons.
