Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team closed out its regular season with a 15-7 loss to fifth-ranked Tufts University on Wednesday evening.
The loss drops the 13th-ranked Polar Bears to 11-4 (6-4 NESCAC) and places Bowdoin third in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament that begins on Saturday afternoon. The third-seeded Polar Bears will host sixth-seeded Wesleyan in a quarterfinal game at 1:00 p.m.
The Polar Bears were led on Wednesday night by three goals and an assist from senior tri-captain Keegan Mehlhorn, who gave Bowdoin its only lead at 1-0 four minutes into the action. The Jumbos netted seven of the next eight and led 7-2 on a goal by sophomore Beau Wood assisted by Cole Bailey at the 12:02 mark of the second quarter.
Tufts would score seven times in the second quarter and lead 11-5 at intermission. Mehlhorn recorded all four of his points in the first half for Bowdoin with three goals and an assist on an man-up tally by sophomore Franklin Reis.
The offensive output slowed considerably in the second half as the teams traded goals in the third quarter for a 12-6 Tufts advantage. The Jumbos pushed the lead to 14-6 one minute into the fourth and finished with a commanding 50-29 advantage in shots, and had a 47-37 margin for groundballs. The teams combined for 58 turnovers on the night.
Junior Billy Bergner had a goal and two assists for Bowdoin. Sophomore Dylan Hannes, junior Sether Hanson and senior Matthew Egan all finished with two caused turnovers and two groundballs apiece. Chris Williamson made 16 stops in the Bowdoin cage.
Bowdoin's NESCAC quarterfinal will be a rematch of a contest played less than two weeks ago in Middletown, Conn. The Polar Bears garnered an early 4-0 lead and never trailed in an eventual 7-5 victory over the Cardinals.
