BOSTON, Mass. - Tournament MVP Kim Tess-Wanat capped an outstanding performance by scoring the game-winning goal with five seconds remaining in overtime to give the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team a 2-1 victory over UMass-Boston in the championship of the Codfish Bowl on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, Bowdoin became the first team other than Trinity College (Conn.) to skate away with the tournament championship. The Bantams had won the crown each year since the tourney's inception in 2008.
Tess-Wanat earned her tournament MVP honors by netting both goals in Tuesday's game. The forward finished the tournament with a combined five goals and three assists. Assisting both of Bowdoin's goals was Kayte Holtz, while Dominique Lozzi assisted her team's first score, and Madeline Lane assisted the game-winning tally. Kayla Kiernan scored UMass-Boston's lone goal.
Kayla Lessard stopped 26 shots to earn All-Tournament honors in addition to Tess-Wanat. Defender Emily Tang was also recognized as an All-Tournament honoree.
The Polar Bears will look to carry their momentum into a weekend NESCAC series at Connecticut College. Bowdoin will visit the Camels in New London for games on Friday and Saturday.
