BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kayte Holtz scored the game-winning goal with 95 seconds remaining to give the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team a weekend of sweep of Wesleyan on Saturday, 3-2, at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
The Polar Bears improve to 6-5-2 (4-2-0 NESCAC) this season while the Cardinals drop to 2-13-0 (1-7-0 NESCAC).
The teams wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as both squads found goals on their first shots of the game. Mallory Andrews gave the Polar Bears a lead just 1:33 into the contest by finishing off a breakaway with a shot from the slot. Moments later, Glenn Hartman-Mattso answered for the Cardinals by poking home a loose puck in the crease to even the score 32 seconds later.
Bowdoin took the lead early in the second period when, while shorthanded, Shelagh Merrill won a battle for the puck in the Wesleyan zone. Merrill fed Dominique Lozzi in front, who took two shots to knock the puck past Ashleigh Corvi at 4:20.
The Cardinals evened the score thanks to a 5x3 power play midway through the third period. Jill Reynolds took control of the puck at center ice, skated unchecked into the Bowdoin zone and snapped a top-shelf goal from the right circle at 11:04. Holtz rescued Bowdoin with under two minutes to play, however. After a sustained possession in the Cardinal zone, Chelsea MacNeil ripped a shot from above the left circle. Holtz pounced on the rebound, tucking it under the crossbar to give Bowdoin the go-ahead tally with 1:35 to go.
Corvi made 31 stops for Wesleyan while Kayla Lessard stopped 17 for Bowdoin, who held a 34-19 edge in shots. Kendra Sweet was the lone player with a multi-point game, earning two assists for the Polar Bears.
