BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's and women's indoor track and field teams swept their opening meets of 2012 at Farley Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Competing in four-team fields, the Polar Bears each took first place overall. The women totaled 241 points to beat Southern Maine (132), WPI (130) and Brandeis (42). The men scored 231 and beat WPI (168), Southern Maine (109) and Brandeis (38).
The Polar Bears had several winners on the women's side, including Emily Barr in the 60 meter dash (8.30) and Elsa Millett in the 600 meter run (1:41.09). Bowdoin excelled in the distance events as Chantal Croteau took the 1000 meter run (3:07.49), Anna Ackerman placed first in the 3000 meters (10:50.26) and Olivia MacKenzie won the 5000 meters (18:08.37). The Polar Bears swept the relay events by winning the 4x200 (1:52.55, Cleo Daoud, Annie Huyler, Emily Clark, Samantha Copland), 4x400 (4:17.94, Copland, Daoud, Barr, Millett) and 4x800 (10:25.70, Liza LePage, Maddie Lamo, Caroline Tory, Maggie Bryan). In the field events, Erin Silva won the pole vault (3.38 meters), Laura Peterson won the long jump (5.07 meters) and Randi London took the shot put (11.49 meters).
In the men's meet, Bowdoin's depth carried the day. Winners included Matthew Hillard in the 800 meters (2:01.35), Alex Williams in the 3000 meters (8:51.94) and Sam Seekins in the 5000 meters (15:20.15). The 4x800 meter relay team of Christian Sleeper, Will Ossoff, Colin Ogilvie and Colin Fong took the gold in 8:20.92. In the field events, Samuel Chick took the triple jump (12.95 meters) for the Polar Bears.
