Third Period Flurry Lifts Bowdoin Over Wesleyan in Women's Hockey

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team scored three goals in the final period to pull away from Wesleyan in a 4-1 win on Friday evening at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

Kayte Holtz scored twice to lead the Polar Bears (5-5-2, 3-2-0 NESCAC). Kelsey Muller accounted for the lone goal for the Cardinals (2-12-0, 1-6-0 NESCAC).

The Cardinals went ahead first as Muller knocked home a rebound at 11:53 of the opening period. Wesleyan goaltender Ashleigh Corvi stopped the first 17 shots she saw in the period, including a pair of nifty glove saves to keep the early lead. But Bowdoin earned a late power play and, after a broken clear by the Cardinal defense, Chelsea MacNeil found Kayte Holtz in front, who snapped a top-shelf score at 18:41 to tie the score before intermission.

Following a scoreless second stanza, Bowdoin took the lead 3:18 into the final frame when Gabbie Grandin ripped a shot from the point that Holtz redirected in front. The Polar Bears took advantage of a 5x3 power play to increase their lead midway through the period. Alexandra Fahey slipped a shot from the point inside the left post at 12:27. MacNeil poked home a loose puck with 15 seconds remaining to wrap up the scoring.

Tara Connolly earned 22 saves in net for the Polar Bears for her fourth win of the season (4-3-1). Corvi stopped 33 shots for the Cardinals and dropped to 2-11-0 on the year.
