Polar Bears Hammer 16th-Ranked Nazareth For First Win of Season

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team routed 16th-ranked Nazareth, 21-5, for it's first win of the 2011 campaign Wednesday afternoon at Sacred Heart University. The Polar Bears improve to 1-1 this season while the Golden Flyers fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Polar Bears absolutely dominated the Golden Flyers for the final three periods, outscoring their opponents 17-2 over the final 45 minutes, including an 8-1 second quarter and 7-0 third period. Bowdoin netted its highest goal total and largest margin of victory since 2008, when they defeated Norwich University 27-0.

Bowdoin's scoring was well-distributed, with first-year Patrick Lawlor scoring three goals and an assist to lead the way. Ben Chadwick, Keegan Mehlhorn, Mark Flibotte, Franklin Reis and Nathan Fritts all had two goals apiece. Russell Halliday had a goal and three assists for Bowdoin.

Tied at three late in the first period, Billy Bergner gave Bowdoin the lead for good with just 19 ticks left in the opening frame. The goal sparked a 9-0 surge that upped the Polar Bear advantage to 12-3 late in the second quarter. Scott Castle's second goal of the game stopped the bleeding for Nazareth and made it 12-4 at the break. Bowdoin put the contest out of reach in the third quarter, when they scored seven unanswered goals in a 7:22 span.

Jake McCampbell made eight saves for Bowdoin in the victory. Three goalies split time in net for Nazareth, making 11 combined saves. The Polar Bears held a 49-30 edge in shots and won 19 of 29 faceoffs, headlined by a 10-14 effort by Brendan Hughes.

The Polar Bears will return to action on March 19 at Trinity College (1:00 p.m.).
