CLINTON, N.Y. - Kayla Lessard turned away 28 shots to lead the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 win against Hamilton at Russell Sage Rink Saturday. Dominique Lozzi tallied a goal and an assist for the Polar Bears, who improve to 8-4-1 (5-2-0 NESCAC) this season.
Lozzi's fourth goal of the year gave the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead with a power-play score at 5:02 of the first period. The Continentals countered at 11:35 of the first when Katie Zimmerman tallied her team-leading fourth goal. Bowdoin took the lead for good on an unusual play early in the second period. Michaela Calnan dumped the puck off the glass from just over center ice as the Polar Bears prepared to make a change. Hamilton goalie Becca Hazlett came out of the crease to play the puck along the boards, but the puck caromed off the glass and rolled right into the empty goal before Hazlett could recover at 3:52. The goal was the first this season for Calnan. Bowdoin finished the period with an 18-5 shot advantage.
The Continentals (4-7-0, 3-4) had three power plays in the third period, but couldn't score. Finally, Hazlett (29 saves) left the ice for an extra skater with one minute left. Stephanie Ludy '13 clinched the win for Bowdoin with 10.5 seconds remaining when she took a pass from the side of the goal from Lozzi and buried a backhand shot from the slot into the empty net for her second goal this season.
The Polar Bears lead the all-time series 22-2-3, and held a slim 32-29 advantage in shots. Bowdoin went 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all seven Hamilton chances. The Polar Bears travel to Connecticut College for a conference game on Sunday afternoon.
