BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Adam Tracy scored four goals as the Bowdoin
College men's lacrosse team held off a late Bates flurry in a 6-5
win on Wednesday evening at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears improve to
7-5 (4-3 NESCAC) and move into a four-way tie for third place in
the conference standings. The Bobcats (4-7, 0-7 NESCAC) are still
looking for their first NESCAC win of the campaign.
Bates was led by three goals from Rory Cosgrove. David Barrett and
Rob Highland also scored for the Bobcats. Tracy had an assist in
addition to his four scores. Justin Starr and Russell Halliday also
found the back of the net for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin scored the final four goals of the opening half, including
three from Tracy, to carry a 4-1 advantage into intermission. After
extending their lead to 5-1 on Halliday's goal shortly after the
break, Cosgrove and Highland trimmed the lead to 5-3 at the end of
three quarters. Tracy re-upped the lead to three goals off a nifty
feed from Billy Bergner with 9:46 to go, giving the hosts a 6-3
edge.
The Bobcats made things interesting with two scores in the span of
six seconds, taking advantage of a Bowdoin penalty with a man-up
goal from Rory Cosgrove at 5:08. Cody Newman won the ensuing
faceoff and David Barrett scored at 5:02 to make it a one goal
game. Bates nearly tied the game on an identical sequence less than
10 seconds later, as Newman won the draw and fed Barrett, only to
see his shot rocket off the post, maintaining Bowdoin's one-goal
lead.
The Bobcats out-shot the Polar Bears 35-21, but only 16 of Bates'
shots we on-target and 11 were stopped by Bowdoin netminder
Christopher Williamson. Adam Scharff made 10 stops between the
pipes for the Bobcats, who got four ground balls from Reid Whelan.
Henry Andrews had a team-high five ground balls for Bowdoin.
