AMHERST, Mass. - A seven-goal second quarter propelled the
Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 13-8 win over Bowdoin on
Saturday afternoon. The Jeffs earn their first win of the season
and improve to 1-3 (1-2 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 2-4
(1-2 NESCAC) on the year.
Sam Jakimo had 14 saves to lead Amherst to the win while teammate
Cole Cherney scored a game-high four goals. Russell Halliday led
Bowdoin with three goals while Keegan Mellhorn added a pair. Owen
Smith had two assists in the loss for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin led 1-0 after the first quarter, but Amherst scored
five-straight and seven overall in the second frame to grab a
commanding 7-2 edge at halftime. The Polar Bears scored four of the
first six goals to open the third quarter, and closed to within
three, 10-7, after Adam Tracy set up Steve Thomas with 5:15
remaining in the period. But Amherst scored two late goals,
including a Cherney tally with just 36 seconds left in the quarter
to carry a 12-7 advantage into the fourth.
Bowdoin's Robert Burkhardt made six saves in the loss. Bowdoin
held a large 17-8 edge in face-offs thanks to eight wins from Brian
Durkin and nine from Gregory Kamford. The Polar Bears also held a
42-34 advantage in shots and 38-31 lead in ground balls.
