BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team
celebrated Senior Day at Sidney J. Watson Arena with a dominating
8-0 victory over Wesleyan University. The Polar Bears snap a
three-game losing skid and improve to 10-10-2 (7-6-1 NESCAC) while
the Cardinals drop to 4-16-1 (2-12-0 NESCAC) on the year.
Kayte Holtz, Katie Herter and Shelagh Merrill scored two goals
apiece for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin's offense went to work early in the first period when
junior Emily Neilson slipped the puck behind the net to Jay Greene
who found Maria Nicolais posted at the point. Nicolais fired a one
timer past Wesleyan netminder Nicole Bonneau at 4:22.
Bowdoin's second goal of the period came at 12:53 when Shana
Natelson found Katie Holtz streaking through the neutral zone.
Holtz easily slid past the Cardinal defense and beat Bonneau.
In the second frame, Holtz notched her second goal after converting
on a pass from from Kim Tess-Wanat in front of the Cardinal's
net at 8:19. Just seconds later, Jill Campbell increased the lead
to 4-0 off a pass from Alexandra Fahey at 9:01. Shelagh Merrill
added another on a tricky shot off the side boards at 12:51. Katie
Herter made it 6-0 before the second period came to a close at
19:31. Bowdoin added two more goals in the third period courtesy of
Merrill and Herter to round out the scoring.
Bonneau finished with 42 saves for the Cardinals. Sage Santangelo
made seven saves in two periods of play for Bowdoin before giving
way to senior Kelly Keebler, who stopped four shots in the final
stanza.
Bowdoin honored four seniors Saturday afternoon in recognition of
their four years of dedication to the program. Seniors Shana
Natelson, Katherine Pokrass, Kelly Keebler, and Maria Nicolais
played their last regular season home game at Watson Arena.
