Middlebury Deals Bowdoin First Loss of the Season

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team suffered their first setback of the season as Middlebury took advantage of 11 power plays chances in a 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon. The Polar Bears fall to 3-1 (2-1 NESCAC) while the Panthers remain unbeaten at 5-0 (4-0) this year.

Middlebury opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 13:04 mark of the first period. After a pair of saves by Bowdoin netminder Sage Santangelo, Anna McNally stuffed home a rebound from the far side to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Polar Bears earned their first shot on goal 15 minutes into the period, and took advantage of a Panther turnover shortly thereafter. Shelagh Merrill picked off a pass and skated across the top of the left face-off circle before snapping a shot over the shoulder of Middlebury netminder Alexi Bloom to tie the game at 1-1.

Middlebury's Julia Ireland gave the Panthers a 2-1 advantage 4:32 into the second period, before the Sara Uglade made it a 3-1 game at 8:51 with a quick wrister to the top left corner for a power play goal. Madison Styrbicki scored Middlebury's third power play goal of the game (3 for 11) at 11:35, blasting home a shot from the right side that grazed a defender's stick.

Bowdoin came back to make it a 4-2 game late in the period, when Kendra Sweet scored with 2:14 left in the period. The four-on-four goal came when Sweet's snapshot towards goal hit a stick and quickly changed direction on its way into the back of the net. The lone third period goal came with 13 seconds remaining, when Nora Bergman (2 assists) hit McNally breaking up ice for the empty-netter.

Bloom finished the game with 17 saves to earn the win, while Santangelo made 46 stops for Bowdoin, who were called for 11 penalties compared to just three for the host Panthers.
