Polar Bears Remain Perfect With Road Win at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's hockey team scored two third-period goals to snap a 1-1 tie, then held off Williams College for a 3-2 victory at Lansing Chapman Rink Saturday night. Bowdoin improves to 3-0-0 for the first time since 2006 and willplay at Middlebury at 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

Dominique Lozzi notched a goal and an assist in the win for the Polar Bears, while sophomore goalie Tara Connolly came away with 29 saves on the night. Sophomore Sam Weinstein had both goals for Williams.

After a scoreless first period — Connolly made 13 saves in the first 20 minutes — Williams broke out on top at the 11:29 mark when Weinstein fired a shot from just inside the blueline into the top right corner of the net. Less than three minutes later, Bowdoin tied it with its own power-play goal when Lozzi dumped a shot on goal from the left point, it slipped through a crowd in front of the net, touched the inside of the left post and snuck in the goal.

The Polar Bears killed off an Eph power-play at the start of the third period as Connolly made a great stop of a Kristen Tubbs shot with just two seconds remaining in the man-advantage. Then, 6:53 into the final frame, a loose puck came out from behind the Williams goal and rested on the left post. Bowdoin sophomore Stephanie Ludy poked it past Williams goalie Rachel Nguyen for the go-ahead goal.

The Ephs pressed for the equalizer but Connolly was up to task, stopping eight shots total in the third. With 2:49 left, Kayte Holtz picked up an important insurance goal, receiving a pass from Lozzi at the bottom of the right circle and wristing a shot past Nguyen. That goal stood out even more when Weinstein notched her second power-play goal of the night with 1:46 remaining, but the Polar Bears were able to kill off the remaining time, including the final 65 seconds with Williams pulling Nguyen for a 6 on 5 advantage

Williams outshot Bowdoin 31-19 in the contest. Nguyen finished with 16 saves for the Ephs. Saturday night's game was delayed nearly 30 minutes due to weather and traffic delays that caused the Polar Bears to arrive later than planned.
