NORTON, Mass. - The Bowdoin and Wheaton College women's soccer
teams played to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference game played at
Mirrione Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Ranked fifth in New England
by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA),
Wheaton moves to 11-2-2. Bowdoin is now 5-3-2 on the
year.
Polar Bear junior Ellery
Gould broke the stalemate midway through the opening half,
taking advantage of a defensive breakdown. Senior Christina Aceto's serve deep
into the box found two Lyons, but after a failed clear Gould gained
possession and blasted her shot into the back of the net. Gould's
marker was her ninth goal of the season and ups her career total to
29. She has scored in six consecutive games for the Polar Bears
dating back to September 21 and has found the back of the net in
eight of Bowdoin's ten games this season.
Wheaton's second-half tally from freshman Joy-Marie Fernandes
nearly 12 minutes into the frame came on a long shot from nearly
the same area of the field Aceto's pass to Gould took place.
Fernandes' second goal of the fall traveled through the box and
into the left side netting for the game's final tally.
Both teams had multiple opportunities for the winner, but Lyon
junior goalie Erin Cawley and Bowdoin senior keeper Kat Flaherty came away
with big saves to preserve the tie. Cawley finished with
seven stops, including turning aside an 84th-minute header off a
corner kick. Flaherty was credited with 10 saves, with five
coming in the second stanza alone.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday with a key
NESCAC contest at Williams.
