MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Behind a pair of goals from sophomore Shelagh
Merrill and a three-point game from junior Chelsea Young, Bowdoin
College (8-7-2) rolled to a 7-0 victory over Wesleyan University
(3-12-0) Saturday afternoon. Bowdoin improved to 6-3-1 in NESCAC
play with the victory, while Wesleyan fell to 1-9-0 in the
conference standings.
Bowdoin wasted no time getting started as the visitors jumped out
to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Young got things started with an
unassisted tally at 6:02, her first goal of the season, and Merrill
made it 2-0 with her team-leading 10th goal two minutes later.
Freshman Kim Tess-Wanat made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal at
13:14.
Bowdoin extended its lead to 5-0 with two goals on back-to-back
shots in the second frame. With the Polar Bears on the power play,
freshman Kayte Holtz recorded her eighth goal, with senior Shana
Natelson and sophomore Alexandra Chlebeck tallying assists. Thirty
seconds later, freshman Kenzie Novak sent the puck past Wesleyan
freshman goalie Ashleigh Corvi for her second goal of the season.
Merrill made it 6-0 with a power-play marker with 2:42 remaining in
the frame. Sophomore Katie Herter concluded the scoring 1:10 into
the third period, with sophomores Kendra Sweet and Alexandra Fahey
receiving assists.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday evening when they
host Plymouth State at 5:00 p.m.
