BRUNSWICK, Maine - Wheaton's Jessica Stuart scored the game's only
goal with 8:24 remaining to lift the 24th-ranked Lyons women's
soccer team to a 1-0 win at Bowdoin on Saturday. Wheaton improves
to 7-0 this season while the Polar Bears fall to 1-2 overall.
A back-and-forth contest resulted in a scoreless draw at the half.
Bowdoin out-shot the visitors in the opening stanza, but the Lyons
upped the offensive pressure in the second period, as the Polar
Bear back line swept aside several good chances. Wheaton's best
opportunity to break through came with 10 minutes remaining when
Cassey Muse broke into the box and fired a shot that Bowdoin
netminder Kat Flaherty deflected to the wing. Wheaton's Emily
Vincunas lined up a hard shot towards an open net, but her volley
was blocked by Bowdoin's Molly Duffy to keep the game
scoreless.
Just two minutes later, a flurry of action at the top of the
Bowdoin defensive zone resulted in a loose ball towards the goal.
Stuart beat all Bowdoin defenders to the ball and lofted a shot
just over the head of Flaherty and below the crossbar to give the
Lyons a one-goal lead. Bowdoin responded in kind, pushing the
action towards the Wheaton goal. The best Polar Bear chance came
with 2:30 remaining when Ellery Gould played a beautiful ball from
the right wing that found the head of Celeste Swain, who knocked it
towards the net. But Wheaton's Lindsay Leddy made a diving stop to
seal the victory for the Lyons.
Flaherty finished with 12 saves in the defeat for Bowdoin, while
Leddy made six stops for Wheaton.
