BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin goaltender Jake McCampbell made 18
saves and held Trinity scoreless for a 34-minute stretch to lead
the Polar Bear men's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over the
Bantams in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College
Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday. The second-seeded Polar
Bears (10-5) advance to the semifinals for the third time in four
seasons while the seventh-seeded Bantams end their year with a mark
of 10-6.
Top-seeded Middlebury College will host the semifinals and the
Polar Bears will play Tufts University in the late game at 3:00
p.m. on May 2. The host Panthers will play Wesleyan University in
the early game. The winners will play on Sunday, May 3 for the
NESCAC Championship.
Things looked good in the early going for the visitors, as the
Bantams received goals from Max Alderman and Rob Mountain to take a
2-0 advantage just 5:51 into the contest. Bowdoin bounced back with
goals from Matt Legg and Cullen Winkler, but the Bantams closed the
quarter with a pair of goals from Alderman and Kevin Looby, who
found the back of the net with just a second remaining in the
period to give Trinity a 4-2 lead. Legg's second goal of the game
trimmed the lead to 4-3 before Adam Tracy netted a goal to deadlock
the game at 4-4 for Bowdoin. Greg Brennan quickly answered with a
tally for Trinity a mere nine seconds later. It would be the last
lead of the game for the Bantams, with 8:02 remaining in the half,
as the visitors would not score for the next 34:42 of game
play.
After Steve Thomas tied the game before halftime for Bowdoin, the
Polar Bears exploded for five goals in the third quarter to take a
commanding lead. Five different players scored in the run, the last
of which came on an outstanding individual effort by Ben Chadwick
with 2:12 left in the frame to give the hosts a 10-5 lead. Rob
Halliday scored with 10:23 left in the fourth quarter to push the
lead to 11-5. Trinity scored three times in the final 3:24 to close
out the scoring.
McCampbell finished with 18 stops, including 10 in the fourth
quarter as Trinity desperately tried to climb back into the game.
Adam Tracy led the Bowdoin scorers with two goals and two assists.
Harry Ashforth had three assists on the day as Matt Legg, Steve
Thomas, Rob Halliday and Cullen Winkler each had two goals for
Bowdoin. Kevin Looby, Greg Brennan and Max Alderman had two tallies
apiece for Trinity. Graham Fadden made 14 stops in net for the
Bantams before giving way to Alex Palma in the closing minutes.
