LEWISTON, Maine - Bowdoin College bounced back from a four-game
skid to defeat Bates College 15-7 in a NESCAC men's lacrosse game
played in relentlessly driving rain Tuesday evening at Campus
Avenue Field.
The Polar Bears (8-5, 5-3 NESCAC) led 4-3 early in the second
period before embarking on a 9-2 run over the middle half of the
contest. Adam Tracy led Bowdoin with four goals and one assist,
while Russell Halliday, Matt Legg and Steve Thomas added two goals
apiece. Justin Starr scored once and dished out three assists.
Tyler Moore scored two goals for the Bobcats (3-9, 1-7 NESCAC),
with Les Wade and Rory Cosgrove adding a goal and an assist
apiece.
Bowdoin got out to a 4-1 lead at the end of one period, but Bates
scored back-to-back goals to open the second, with Sam Geller
scoring unassisted at 12:29, followed by Wade stripping Bowdoin
goalie Jake McCampbell of the ball and firing into an open goal to
close the gap to 4-3 with 10:36 left in the half.
Bowdoin responded with an unassisted tally by Tracy 29 seconds
later. Forty-two seconds after that Tracy fed Mark Flibotte to make
it 6-3, and Tracy scored again with 5:37 left on Cullen Winkler's
second assist of the game for a four-goal lead.
Bates' David Barrett cut it to 7-4 with 2:53 left in the half, but
Bowdoin again reponded quickly, with a goal by Winkler 31 seconds
later and a score by Russall Halliday right off the ensuing
faceoff, sending the teams into halftime with Bowdoin ahead 9-4.
Bowdoin benefited from winning 15 of 24 faceoffs in the game.
The Polar Bears outscored the Bobcats 4-0 in the third period to
complete a 6-0 run that put the game out of reach entering the
fourth quarter. Bates tried to make a game of it with three
straight goals in the fourth quarter, two by Moore sandwiching a
score by Mike Antoniou, who deflected a shot by Wade into the net,
and with 8:19 left Bates had cut the deficit to 13-7. But Bowdoin
tacked on two goals to its lead to finish out the scoring.
Bates goalie Adam Scharff made six saves, while Bowdoin's
McCampbell came up with 11 saves. The Polar Bears outshot the
Bobcats by only a 32-28 margin, and both teams were 0-for-4 on
extra-man opportunities.
