WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College men's lacrosse team
defeated 20th-ranked Bowdoin, 9-8, in overtime on Wednesday
evening. The Mules improve to 7-5 (3-4 NESCAC) while the Polar
Bears drop to 7-5 (4-3 NESCAC). Bowdoin has lost four straight
overall with three of the setbacks coming by a single goal.
The Polar Bears trailed 7-5 after three quarters, but took command
in the final quarter with three straight goals. Russell Halliday
had the first goal and Rob Halliday added the next two, with the
lead goal at 8-7 coming with just three minutes left in the game.
Colby bounced back and Stew Brown scored the biggest goal of his
collegiate career with 1:58 remaining to tie the game at 8-8 on a
long blast. Defender Chris Healy, after goalie Alex Farmer had just
made a save for the Mules, raced up the middle of the field and
fired a shot in the back of the net just 1:11 into overtime to give
the Mules the victory. Farmer made 13 saves for Colby while Bowdoin
keeper Jake McCampbell stopped six shots.
The game was tied 2-2 after a quarter, but the Mules outscored
Bowdoin by a 3-1 margin in the second quarter for a 5-3 halftime
lead. Whit McCarthy scored with just 1.7 seconds left in the second
quarter to give the Mules some momentum. After Bowdoin got two
goals to tie the game in the opening five minutes of the third
quarter, Colby came right back with two scores of its own for a 7-5
lead after three periods. McCarthy and Brown each had two goals for
Colby. Caddy Brooks finished with one goal and one assist.
The Hallidays each had two goals for Bowdoin, while Adam Tracy
and Owen Smith both had one goal and one assist.
