WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College men's lacrosse team
held Bowdoin scoreless for the first 28:10 of the game en route to
a 10-7 victory on Saturday afternoon. In a rematch of last season's
NESCAC title game, the Polar Bears fall to 7-4 (4-2 NESCAC) with
their third-straight setback while Williams improves to 5-5 (4-3
NESCAC).
Bowdoin couldn't get on the board until 1:50 remaining in the
second quarter as Williams jumped out to a 5-0 advantage. Harry
Ashforth managed to find the back of the net with 1:50 left and
then, following another Ephs goal, with under a minute to play as
the Polar Bears closed the gap to 6-2 at halftime.
A pair of Sam Hargrove goals pushed the Williams advantage to 8-3
with 14:04 left in the third quarter before Bowdoin began one of
their trademark second-half pushes. Owen Smith keyed a four-goal
Bowdoin run that included tallies by Cullen Winkler, Russ Halliday
and Ben York to close the third quarter as the Polar Bears trimmed
the lead to 8-7 heading into the fourth.
But Williams' defense clamped down from there, not allowing
Bowdoin to score again and adding a pair of late tallies to clinch
the victory. Michael Gerbush made 11 saves to earn the win for
Williams. Jake McCampbell stopped nine shots in defeat for Bowdoin.
Asforth and Winkler had two goals and one assist apiece to lead the
Polar Bear scoring while Ashforth earned 11 groundballs to lead all
players.
