BRUNSWICK, Maine - Sophomore Owen Smith scored the game-winning
goal with 13 seconds remaining and goaltender Jake McCampbell made
18 saves in his first career start as the Bowdoin College men's
lacrosse team won their season-opener over 12th-ranked Wesleyan on
Saturday, 4-3.
In a hard-fought defensive contest, both teams struggled to find
their footing in their first game of the year. Bowdoin was able to
take a two-goal lead into halftime thanks to goals from Adam Tracy
and Rob Halliday. McCampbell stopped 10 shots in the opening half
alone as the Cardinals out-shot the Polar Bears 18-8.
Wesleyan wasted little time scoring after the third quarter began,
taking advantage of a Bowdoin penalty to score a man-up goal
courtesy of Jon Killeen 24 ticks into the period. The Cardinals
evened the score late in the frame when Jason Ben-Eliyahu found
Conor Malangone with 26 seconds remaining in the third to even the
score at two apiece heading into the fourth.
Ben-Eliyahu gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game midway
through the final period, circling from behind the net and sneaking
a shot past McCampbell from just outside the crease with 7:12
remaining. Wesleyan carried the lead late into the period and
looked to get an insurance goal with two minutes remaining, but
McCampbell stuffed Russ Follansbee in close and started a break-out
the other direction. On the other side of the field, Cullen Winkler
found Russell Halliday for a one-timer goal with 1:31 left to tie
the score at three apiece.
Wesleyan won the ensuing faceoff, but turned the ball over. Looking
for the game-winner with under a minute to play, Bowdoin lost
control of the ball at midfield. Owen Smith grabbed the loose ball
and went to goal, ripping a shot from 15 yards that tucked in the
top corner of the net with 13 seconds left. Wesleyan could not get
a shot off as time expired.
Mike Borrero made eight saves for Wesleyan in defeat. The Cardinals
went 2-7 in extra-man opportunities while Bowdoin went 0-5.
Wesleyan finished the game with a 36-18 edge in shots.
