Bowdoin Blanks Trinity in Fourth Quarter of Victory

BOX SCORE

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game and held Trinity scoreless for the final 21:05 to take a 10-7 win on Saturday. The Polar Bears (2-0) are ranked 16th in the latest national poll while the Bantams fall to 2-1 this season.

With the game knotted up at 4-4 at the half, Trinity opened the third quarter with goals by senior midfielder Brad Hunnewell and sophomore midfielder Brendan Newland 12 seconds apart to give the Bantams their first lead of the game at 6-4 with 11:14 on the clock. Bowdoin senior attackman Matt Legg scored twice in a 1:30 stretch midway through the frame to tie game back up at 6-6, but Bantam junior attackman Harper Cullen snuck an underhanded shot into the Polar Bear goal to put Trinity back ahead at 7-6 with 6:05 remaining in the third.

Bowdoin took advantage of a Bantam penalty in the final minute before the last break, when senior captain attackman Harry Ashforth found Legg for the second time in the quarter to tie the game for the fifth time in the game, 7-7, with 23 seconds left in the stanza. Ownn Smith rocketed in the clincher from 15 yards away to give Bowdoin an 8-7 lead early in the fourth quarter, before the Polar Bears tacked on two more goals in the final period, scoring on each of their three shots in the last 15 minutes.

Sophomore goalie Jake McCampbell made four of his 10 saves in the final frame for the Polar Bears. Legg finished with three goals to lead the Polar Bears while Smith and Eric Thompson each notched a pair of tallies.

Bowdoin will travel to play in Dallas next week at the Patriot Cup Tournament. The Polar Bears will play Western New England (3/16) and St. Lawrence (3/18) before returning home to play Amherst next Saturday.
