HARTFORD, Conn. - The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team scored
the final four goals of the game and held Trinity scoreless for the
final 21:05 to take a 10-7 win on Saturday. The Polar Bears (2-0)
are ranked 16th in the latest national poll while the Bantams fall
to 2-1 this season.
With the game knotted up at 4-4 at the half, Trinity opened the
third quarter with goals by senior midfielder Brad Hunnewell and
sophomore midfielder Brendan Newland 12 seconds apart to give the
Bantams their first lead of the game at 6-4 with 11:14 on the
clock. Bowdoin senior attackman Matt Legg scored twice in a 1:30
stretch midway through the frame to tie game back up at 6-6, but
Bantam junior attackman Harper Cullen snuck an underhanded shot
into the Polar Bear goal to put Trinity back ahead at 7-6 with 6:05
remaining in the third.
Bowdoin took advantage of a Bantam penalty in the final minute
before the last break, when senior captain attackman Harry Ashforth
found Legg for the second time in the quarter to tie the game for
the fifth time in the game, 7-7, with 23 seconds left in the
stanza. Ownn Smith rocketed in the clincher from 15 yards away to
give Bowdoin an 8-7 lead early in the fourth quarter, before the
Polar Bears tacked on two more goals in the final period, scoring
on each of their three shots in the last 15 minutes.
Sophomore goalie Jake McCampbell made four of his 10 saves in the
final frame for the Polar Bears. Legg finished with three goals to
lead the Polar Bears while Smith and Eric Thompson each notched a
pair of tallies.
Bowdoin will travel to play in Dallas next week at the Patriot Cup
Tournament. The Polar Bears will play Western New England (3/16)
and St. Lawrence (3/18) before returning home to play Amherst next
Saturday.
