BOX SCORE
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Keyed by a hat trick from freshman Dominique
Lozzi and a four-point game (two goals, two assists) from senior
defender Lindsay McNamara, Bowdoin College cruised to a 5-3 win
over Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. Bowdoin clinched a
spot in the NESCAC Championship with the victory, while Wesleyan
was eliminated from playoff contention.
Lozzi's three goals came after McNamara had put Bowdoin up 2-1
just over one minute into the second period. McNamara had scored
off a rebound to give Bowdoin a lead it would not relinquish, and
Lozzi followed with a tally at 5:52 to extend Bowdoin's advantage
to 3-1. Wesleyan halved the deficit with a one-timer off the stick
of freshman Jill Reynolds at 13:51, but Lozzi answered back 50
seconds later to extend the visitors' lead to 4-2. Lozzi added
another marker 5:05 into the third period to conclude the scoring
for Bowdoin while improving her team-leading figures to 11 goals
and 15 points. Sophomore Sena Ito scored with 2:01 left in the game
to cut Bowdoin's lead to 5-3, but Ito's goal was the final score of
the afternoon.
McNamara had started the scoring with a goal at 15:39 of the
first period to put Bowdoin up 1-0. With her four points on the
afternoon, McNamara moved into a tie for second place on the Polar
Bears scoring list this season with 12 points. Wesleyan senior
Hannah Jackson answered back with a power-play slapshot from the
point with 2:15 left in the frame for a 1-1 tie at the first
intermission.
With 51 saves in the game, Wesleyan senior keeper Rachel
Stemerman posted her seventh game this year with 50 or more saves
as she broke the single-season record at Wesleyan with 818 this
year. Emileigh Mercer made 20 saves between the pipes for Bowdoin
in the win.
Bowdoin is now unbeaten in its last 20 games against Wesleyan,
holding a record of 19-0-1 over that time. The two teams battled to
a 2-2 deadlock in Middletown in 2007-08. Wesleyan's last win over
the Polar Bears was a 4-3 overtime triumph in Brunswick during the
1998-99 season. Bowdoin hosts Colby College on Tuesday before a
pair of games at Trinity College on Friday and Saturday.
