BOX SCORE
CLINTON, N.Y. - Bowdoin's Jill Campbell scored the game-winner
with 1:21 remaining in the third period to give the Polar Bear
women's ice hockey team a 4-3 win over Hamilton on Friday
afternoon. Bowdoin improves to 5-10-1 this season and are unbeaten
in their last 22 games against Hamilton (19-0-3) dating back to
1996-97. Maria Nicolais scored a pair of goals in the win for
Bowdoin.
Bowdoin skated to a 3-0 lead only to see Hamilton scramble to
tie it in the third period. Bowdoin grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:36 of
the first period on a backhand shot by Nicolais from the bottom of
the left circle. Sam Stewart gave the Polar Bears a 2-0 advantage
with 2:45 left in the first with her first goal this season.
Stewart's high shot from the bottom of the left circle was from a
sharp angle, but the puck settled in the back of the net
anyway.
Nicolais struck again 3:03 into the second period with her fourth
goal for Bowdoin. Chelsea Young took a shot that was saved by Shine
but the rebound went to Nicolais, who poked the puck past a diving
Meg Shine (37 saves).
The Continentals called timeout at 6:42 of the second and then
started their rally. Amy Allen scored her 11th goal with 5:33
remaining in the second period during a power play for the first
Hamilton goal. Her wrist shot from the top of the right circle was
partially stopped by Santangelo, but the puck slipped between her
pads.
Kristen Pallen made it a one-goal game at 6:55 of the third with
four seconds left on another power play. A shot from the slot by
Riley Smith hit the left post and Pallen was there for the rebound
and her second goal this season.
Campbell's game-winning came with under two minutes to play.
After picking up a loose puch in the neutral zone, the sophomore
skated with the puck from the right side and fired a high wrist
shot from the top of the slot for her fourth goal this season. Sage
Santangelo made 22 saves for the Polar Bears, including 12 in the
third period. The Polar Bears held a 41-25 advantage in shots. The
Continentals were 2-for-5 on the power play and they killed both
Bowdoin opportunities. Hamilton has lost three straight games.
