BOX SCORE
CLINTON, N.Y. - Dominique Lozzi scored two goals as the Bowdoin
College women's ice hockey team hung on for a 5-4 win against
Hamilton College at Russell Sage Rink on Saturday afternoon Jill
Campbell and Kayte Holtz chipped in one goal and one assist apiece
for Bowdoin (3-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 NESCAC). The Polar Bears
continued to dominate the all-time series, 20-1-3.
Hamilton (1-4-2, 1-3-2) was led offensively by Riley Smith, who
tallied two goals. Laura DiCarlo added one goal and one assist.
Bowdoin held a comfortable 5-1 lead early in the third period, but
the Continentals roared back with three goals to make things
interesting late. Hamilton pulled its goalie with 43 seconds left
in favor of an extra skater, and the Continentals had a 6-on-4
situation for the last 22 seconds after the Polar Bears took a
slashing penalty. However, Hamilton could not put a shot on goal in
the final seconds.
Bowdoin seized a 1-0 lead just 2:28 into the first period. Holtz
received a pass from Campbell behind the defense and just past the
red line. Holtz skated in alone on goalie Lesley Ryder and lifted a
wrist shot over Ryder's glove for her second goal this season. The
Polar Bears had a goal disallowed with about three minutes left in
the period after an official ruled the puck was kicked into the
goal. Bowdoin made the score 2-0 on a power-play goal by Lozzi with
1:06 left in the first. Lozzi took a pass from Holtz and one-timed
a wrist shot from the slot.
The Continentals sliced their deficit in half with a power-play
goal at 8:41 of the second period. Abby Runyon carried the puck
into the zone down the left-hand boards and saw DiCarlo trailing
the play. DiCarlo took the puck into the slot, where she unleashed
a shot that found the back of the net for her third goal.
The Polar Bears answered with three straight goals. Shelagh
Merrill notched the first on a power play at 13:18 of the second.
Merrill's shot from the right circle deflected off a defender's
stick and past Ryder for her third goal. Bowdoin was 2-for-4 with
the extra skater. Campbell followed with her third goal -- a
backhand shot from between the circles -- with 3:10 left in the
period. Lozzi gave the Polar Bears a 5-1 lead with her fifth goal
on a one-timer from just outside the crease 2:51 into the third
period.
Hamilton's furious rally fell just short. Smith started it at 3:12
of the third when she scored on a rebound. Stephanie Miguel pulled
the Continentals within 5-3 during a power play at 7:53. Miguel
wove through the left circle and scored her third goal on a
backhander from the slot. Hamilton went 2-for-8 on the power play.
Smith made it a one-goal game just 24 seconds later. Bowdoin goalie
Kayla Lessard stopped an initial shot by Rachel Rapoza , but Smith
swept in the rebound while lying flat on her stomach.
Lessard finished with 19 saves, including 12 in the second period.
Ryder stopped 23 shots before she left with 2:10 remaining in the
third period with an undisclosed injury. The Polar Bears held a
28-23 advantage in shots.
