BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Shelagh Merrill scored a pair of
goals to lead the Polar Bear women's ice hockey team to a 4-1
season-opening win over the University of Southern Maine on Friday
evening. The Polar Bears (1-0-0) will return to action Tuesday
night against Saint Anselm, while the Huskies (1-4-0) will host
Manhattanville College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Bowdoin improves to
16-0-1 all-time against Southern Maine.
The Polar Bears jumped on the Huskies in the early going, taking
the first 14 shots of the game and converting on a pair of
first-period scores. Bowdoin got on the board thanks to a powerplay
goal five minutes in, as Alex Fahey tipped home a shot from Kendra
Sweet to give the hosts the lead. Just over a minute later,
Kenzie Novak batted home her first collegiate goal to push the
Polar Bears lead to two goals following one period.
Shelagh Merrill upped the Bowdoin lead off a feed from Dominique
Lozzi and slipped a shot between the pads of Jackie Zarb at 6:35.
Merrill scored her second of the night early in the third period,
intercepting a pass in the USM zone and wristing a shorthanded goal
to the top corner of the net to make it 4-0 Polar Bears.
The Huskies broke up the shutout midway through the final period
when Katie Paradis found the back of the net with 7:25 to go. But
that proved to be the only blemish between the pipes for Bowdoin's
Sage Santangelo, who stopped 20 shots on the night. Zarb made 32
saves in net for Southern Maine.
