BRUNSWICK, Maine - Williams goaltender Sara Plunkett made 24
saves as the Ephs women's ice hockey team won for the first time
ever in Brunswick, 3-1 over Bowdoin College on Friday evening.
Williams, who had entered the night 0-12-0 all-time at Dayton
Arena, improves to 3-7-1 this season. Bowdoin drops to 1-6-0
overall.
In a back-and-forth opening period, Bowdoin's best chance to score
came with under a minute to play as the Polar Bears skated in on a
2-on-1 opportunity. Lindsay McNamara found Kate Pokrass in the left
slot, but Pokrass' shot slipped wide of the post to keep the game
scoreless after twenty minutes.
Williams broke into the scoring column early in the second period
as Eliza Foster guided a backhanded shot through the pads of
Emileigh Mercer to give the Ephs a 1-0 advantage. A defensive
misplay later in the frame led to another Williams goal, as a loose
puck in the crease was knocked home by Stephanie Berger at 11:40.
The Ephs upped their lead in the third period on the powerplay,
scoring on a one-timer from Joey Lye to Sam Tarnasky at 6:06.
Bowdoin's lone goal came with under two minutes to play as Kendra
Sweet found Pokrass on the wing, who netted a wrist shot at 18:34
to close out the scoring. Mercer stopped 14 shots in defeat for the
Polar Bears, who held a 25-17 advantage in shots on goal.
