BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The fifth-ranked Amherst College women's ice
hockey team skated to a 4-1 lead and held off a furious Bowdoin
rally to take a 4-3 victory on Friday evening at Sidney J. Watson
Arena in Brunswick. The Jeffs improve to 9-3-0 as Bowdoin drops to
3-8-1 overall this season.
Bowdoin goaltender Sage Santangelo single-handedly kept the Polar
Bears in the contest in the opening frame, as Amherst held a 14-3
advantage in shots. Despite her efforts, the Jeffs were able to
knock one home late in the frame when a Julia Koch slapshot was
tipped in front by Kate Dennett and into the cage with just 1:29
remaining in the period.
After a few early penalties in the second period, the Jeffs were
able to cash in on a powerplay chance when Kirsten Dier skated
around the circle and deposited a top-shelf goal at 8:47. Bowdoin
answered quickly when Maria Nicolais played a perfect pass ahead to
Dominique Lozzi for the freshman's seventh goal of the year at
9:54. Later in the frame, Amherst improved their lead to 3-1 when
Julia Koch finished off a scrum in front of the crease at 12:25.
The teams traded late goals in the period as Amherst's Courtney
Hamilton scored with 42 ticks remaining in the period before
Bowdoin's Lindsay McNamara picked up a loose puck and fired a shot
to the lower right corner with 27 seconds left.
The Polar Bears trimmed the lead to 4-3 late in the final period as
Nicolais caused an Amherst defender to cough up the puck. The
junior took the puck in on a breakaway and tucked a backhanded shot
into the corner to make it a one-goal game with 2:47 left. But
Bowdoin couldn't find the game-tying goal as Amherst clung to
victory.
Caroline Hu made 12 saves for Amherst. Santangelo finished with 30
for the Polar Bears.
