Polar Bears Close Dayton in Style, Blank Wesleyan 3-0

BOX SCORE

BRUNSWICK, Maine - First-year Dominique Lozzi scored two goals to lead the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team to a victory in the final game at Dayton Arena, 3-0, over Wesleyan University on Saturday. The Polar Bears improve to 3-7-0 (1-5-0 NESCAC) while the Cardinals fall to 2-10-1 (1-5-1 NESCAC).

The Bowdoin women's ice hockey team closes Dayton with an all-time mark of 159-73-15 in the venerable arena. All-time, the Polar Bear varsity ice hockey teams posted a mark of 517 wins, 213 losses and 38 ties in 52 seasons at the arena.

Bowdoin dominated the opening period, holding a 19-4 shot advantage, but couldn't push the puck past Wesleyan netminder Rachel Sternerman. After continuing to control the pace of play in the second frame, Bowdoin took advantage on the powerplay midway through the stanza. Dominique Lozzi took a feed from Lindsay McNamara in front of the cage, circled and wristed the puck past Sternerman for a 1-0 Bowdoin lead at 11:01.

Lozzi gave Bowdoin a much-needed insurance tally in the third period, collecting a loose puck in the neutral zone and beating Sternerman one-on-one at 9:03. Minutes later, Jill Campbell slapped a shot that rebounded off Sternerman's pads to the waiting stick of Lindsay McNamara, who banged home the loose puck for a 3-0 lead with 6:05 remaining.

Sage Santangelo posted Bowdoin's first shutout victory with 12 saves. Sternerman ended with 43 stops for Wesleyan. Prior to the game, Bowdoin honored founding members of the school's women's ice hockey program with a ceremonial puck drop.
