AMHERST, Mass. - The fourth-ranked Amherst College women's ice
hockey team scored five goals in the second period to power a 6-1
win over Bowdoin on Saturday. Amherst improves to 2-0-0 on the
season, while Bowdoin drops to 1-2-0.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first period
as Amherst held an 11-8 edge in shots on goal. Amherst's
goaltender Caroline Hu and Bowdoin's Kelly Keebler stopped 8
and 11 shots, respectively, in the frame.
The second period saw an explosion of scoring from the Lord Jeffs,
who needed just 5:30 of the period before scoring. Sophomore Megan
Curry scored the game's first goal, on an assist from Anna
MacLean. Amherst needed just 24 seconds more before rookie Emily
Vitale scored the eventual game-winner, putting Amherst up 2-0.
Bowdoin responded 6:56 into the second period when Shelagh Merill
finished off assists from Jill Campbell and Dominique Lozzi. The
Lord Jeffs refused to let the Polar Bears back into the game, and
pumped in another trio of second period scores.
MacLean and Curry each scored on Vitale assists, before first-year
Josie Fisher scored her first collegiate goal on assists from
MacLean and junior tri-captain Kirsten Dier. In the third period,
Vitale scored an insurance goal off helpers from Curry and senior
tri-captain Julie Radziewicz(.
Keebler finished the night with 22 saves in two periods of action,
before giving way to Sage Santangelo for another six saves in the
third frame. Hu closed out the night with nine saves overall.
