NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team
could not hold a first-period lead, falling to Connecticut College,
4-2, in the team's NESCAC opener on Friday evening. The Polar Bears
fall to 1-1-0 this season while the Camels (1-0-0) win their
season-opener.
Shelagh Merrill scored just 1:14 into regulation, providing the
Polar Bears with an early 1-0 advantage. In the second period, the
Camels would put their offensive into gear. Rachel Lindmark
accounted for the equalizer with 16:57 remaining in the middle
period. Kelsey Kirker set up the score, making a wrap-around move
to snap off a shot from close range. Keebler was able to get a
piece of the shot but Lindmark was in the perfect position in the
slot and stuffed home the rebound to tie the game at one.
Midway through the second period, the Camels took the lead for
good. Brigid O'Gorman ripped off a shot from the left point
that was wide of the left post. Kirker controlled the puck off of
the back board and put it in for the goal to put the Camels on top
2-1.
Kirker added an important insurance goal with 7:18 remaining in
regulation to make it a 3-1 game. Dominique Lozzi halved the Camel
lead for Bowdoin with 1:35 remaining to make things interesting.
The Polar Bears emptied the net with 1:15 remaining to gain the
extra skater. Bowdoin gained the offensive zone and pressured the
goal. But in the closing moments, Abby Hine was able to win a
battle for the puck at the blue line and the sophomore sealed the
victory with an empty-net goal.
Kelly Keebler stood tall in net for Bowdoin, collecting a
career-high 44 saves between the pipes.
