Raymond L. Lebel, of the Class of 1949, was a Maine golf legend as a precocious champion at Lewiston High School, a leader and collegiate champion at Bowdoin, and a national record-setting champion throughout his adult life.

At age seventeen, while still in high school, Ray was the youngest competitor ever to win the Maine Amateur title and, once at Bowdoin, served as captain and player-coach of the golf team, leading the team to both the Maine and New England Collegiate Team Championships. Ray continued his remarkable individual success as well, winning the State Intercollegiate Championship and again being crowned Maine Amateur Champion, the third of his six state amateur titles. Ray won a national record forty-seven club championships and was the Maine Senior Amateur champion thirteen times. He also served on the United States Golf Association Committee for twelve years, as a rules official in Maine and throughout New England, and as president of the New England Golf Association.

For his contributions to the sport, Ray was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1981, and into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame in 1993 as a member of its inaugural class.
