Bowdoin College

Leonardo E. Buck, of the Class of 1938, made his mark at Bowdoin, in the state of Maine, and at the national level as a top amateur golfer and one of the most well-respected and influential rules officials in the sport.

For twenty-five years, Leon stood as one of Maine’s leading amateur golfers, and he is one of only four Bowdoin graduates who have won the state’s amateur golf championship. In addition to winning the Maine State Amateur Championship in 1950, Leon was also the state senior champion on five occasions. Among the USGA’s most revered and influential officials for nearly fifty years, Leon officiated at thirty-six national golf championships, as well as at numerous New England professional and amateur events.

Inducted into both the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Maine Golf Hall of Fame in 1996, Leon received the USGA’s inaugural Ike Granger Centennial Award in 1995 for his service to the organization and to the sport.
